My wife Shirley and I have been married close to 30 years. I have farmed all
my life, it's definately in my blood. I have a diploma in Agriculture from the
University of Saskatchewan. Shirley has had a full time job working off the
farm for the past 12 years. We have two children. Our daughter Rhonda, is a
social worker and lives in Regina with her husband Chad and their young son
Owen. Our son Wes, is married to Diana. They have a baby daughter Samantha,
and live about 5 miles from us.
Our farm is located 3 miles southwest of Holdfast, and consists of around six
sections.
I am the third generation to operate this farm which was started by my grandfather
in 1918. I farmed along with my father for 25 years and our son Wes, the fourth
generation became active in 1998. The family farm is very important to us. The
fifth generation of the family is now arriving and we hope that in the future
they will be a part of it as well.
At the present time, the majority of our farmland is cultivated. We are however
in the process of converting a large portion of the land to forage hay and pasture.
We have always had cattle as part of our farm operation. The cow/calf herd consists
of about 100 head. We plan to increase this number as our forage seed-down crops
establish.
Our farm generally produces all the feed grains and forage consumed by our operation.
We have been backgrounding calves for about 30 years. In 2003 we expanded from
around 100 to 300 head. Even with all of the challenges, I find that I enjoy
this part of our operation the most.
Our backgrounding operation was registered as Correction Line Feeders in 2005.
We have been Oram's customers for a number of years and have been pleased with
their services.We have marketed our beef to people from Holdfast, Penzance,
Regina, and the Saskatoon area. They always give us high marks for the quality
of our beef and the job that Shane, Doris and their staff do.
